ACTIVE LISTENING FAQ
Tel-Aide Montreal is a non-profit organization that offers an active listening service that is anonymous and confidential for individuals in need of someone to talk to or share their emotions with. Our trained (volunteer and employee) listeners are equipped to listen, support, and help callers navigate difficult moments, crises, or periods of loneliness. Tel-Aide Montreal provides a general listening service available in both French and English to assist individuals in coping with everyday challenges.
Active listening is a an empathetic communication technique that aims to understand, without judgment or advice, the feelings and concerns of the speaker. At Tel-Aide Montréal, listeners (volunteers and employees) pay close attention, ask open-ended questions, and respond with empathy, allowing the caller to express themselves freely and to feel heard. This type of listening creates a safe space where the caller can explore their thoughts and emotions.
You can contact TAM by calling the following number: 514 935-1101 or toll-free anywhere in Quebec at 1 877 935-1101. This service is available free of charge to anyone who needs a listening ear. No registration or personal information is required to call.
TAM’s volunteers are carefully selected and receive extensive training in active listening and handling various situations. They are trained to listen with empathy and without judgment, and are supported by supervisors throughout their volunteer experience.
TAM offers its active listening service 24 hours per day, every day. Listeners are available during these hours to provide ongoing support to those in need.
Listening shifts are covered almost entirely by trained volunteers who generously give their time. While we aim to provide 24/7 support, there may be times—especially during high call volumes or due to last-minute absences or other unforeseen circumstances—when all lines are busy or a shift goes uncovered.
We encourage you to try calling again. Your call matters to us, and we’re here to listen as soon as someone is available.
