Men need to be heard too
In June, during Men’s Health Month, it’s important to remind ourselves of this simple truth: men need to be heard too.
And yet, for many men, opening up remains difficult. From a young age, they’re taught to “stay strong,” “tough it out,” and “deal with it alone.” In many environments, vulnerability is still seen as a weakness. The pressure to be high-performing, rational, and in control runs deep, in families, among friends, at work, and in the media.
The result: opening up becomes a challenge, and ultimately, an act of courage. This needs to change.
Men’s Mental Health in Canada: Study Reveals Concerning Data
Here are the key findings from the study conducted by the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation:
- 64% of Canadian men report experiencing moderate to high stress
- 23% are at risk for moderate to severe depressive symptoms
- 1 in 2 men is at risk of social isolation
- 67% have never accessed professional mental health services
What this shows is a clear need, not just for specialized services, but for safe spaces where men can talk without fear of judgment.
Being heard makes a difference. But taking that first step toward available resources can feel like a giant leap into the unknown for some.
Listening lines like Tel-Aide Montréal offer men a safe, anonymous, and confidential space to break the ice and begin to open up. Free mental health support is available 24/7 and judgment-free, every day of the year.
