Night listening: lending an ear in the heart of the night
At night, struggles can feel heavier. Worries, loneliness, thoughts that won’t quiet down. While most resources close their doors at 11 p.m., Tel-Aide Montréal remains present — a voice, an ear, at the other end of the line.
Since May 2025, with the support of our partners, we’ve relaunched Night listening, a service that answers calls between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. In the very first month alone, 670 additional calls were answered. Calls heavy with emotion, filled with deep loneliness, silent pain, and sometimes dark thoughts.
Why nighttime listening matters so much
At night, when everything is quiet, worries and loneliness can feel even heavier. That’s when listening truly matters: offering a human, confidential, and compassionate presence to those who have no one else to turn to.
The Ordre des psychologues du Québec notes that sleep problems are strongly connected to many mental health challenges, making nights especially hard for those affected. Read their article in French ”Les perturbations du sommeil associées aux troubles de santé mentale communs”.
